How do you deal with setbacks?

Have you ever started a diet, or tried anything new, and then something happens and you just end up going back to the way you were? I have! I cannot even count how many times. Setbacks happen all the time and we have a choice as to how we handle setbacks… we can either change the circumstance that is causing the setback, or we can change ourselves, in how we deal with the circumstance (that maybe we cannot change) or the setback.

What’s the first thing that happens when a setback comes and sabotages our good intentions for change? We lose confidence. When we are faced with any setback, our ability to deal with it can be turned into a position of strength, which leads to increased confidence, by asking ourselves some empowering questions, such as :

“What have I learnt from this circumstance or setback? How can it help me next time?”

That is much more empowering isn’t it than saying something like :

“Why does this always happen to me?!”

The first question sets you up to find a solution instead of a negative response and wallowing in self-pity which gets us nowhere!

Some more positive empowering questions you could ask yourself could be :

“What is positive about this situation?”

“How can I make the most of this?”

“What can I learn from it?”

“Is there anything I can do to make it a positive outcome?”

“How can I see this as a challenge rather than a problem?”
